The concept of rhyming: this is a very important pre-reading skill and an essential part of your child’s development in phonics.
Sing or listen to the rhyme ‘Hickory Dickory Dock’. Talk about all the rhyming words in the song – pointing some out e.g. dock/clock. Talk about rhyming words and that when words rhyme they sound the same and give examples of rhyming pairs e.g. bear/pear/house/mouse.
Choose a word from the song and see how many rhyming words you can come up with for it e.g. Clock- what rhymes with clock? You could make an extra challenge by putting a timer on and seeing how many you can come up with in 30 seconds/1 minute etc.
Add a fun twist and come up with a rhyming name for all members of the family!
