Hickory Dickory Dock Clock

Hickory dickory dock clock

What you need

  • Black felt pen
  • Paper/cardboard circle shape (and write numbers 1-5 on it)
  • A cut out a template of a mouse (you could draw your own onto paper or cardboard or cut out from a printed picture)

Benefits

  • Singing and physical actions – a great way to engage your baby/young toddler and help them build focus.
  • Listening to an adult recite rhymes, sing and make noises is a key way that young children develop their own language.
  • Building up key mathematical vocabulary as they count up to five (even babies and young children will benefit from hearing and seeing numbers around them).

The experience

Draw and cut out a large circle, and write on the numbers 1-5 to represent a clock.

Draw and/or cut out a mouse shape. Then, sing this song together:

‘Hickory Dickory dock, the mouse ran up the clock!
The clock struck one, the mouse ran down.
Hickory Dickory dock. TICK TOCK’ (moving arm side to side as you say this part).

Move the cut-out mouse around the clock on to whichever number you want to sing together.

For example: ‘Hickory Dickory dock, the mouse ran up the clock! The clock struck two, the mouse went

BOO. Hickory Dickory dock. TICK TOCK’. Do a peek-a-boo movement, covering your eyes with your hands.

‘Hickory Dickory dock, the mouse ran up the clock!
The clock struck three, the mouse went “WEEEEEE!”
Hickory Dickory dock. TICK TOCK’ (make Circular movements with your arm whilst saying ‘weeeee’.)

‘Hickory Dickory dock, the mouse ran up the clock!
The clock struck four, the mouse said “NO MORE”
Hickory Dickory dock. TICK TOCK’ (shake your finger as the mouse says “no more”.)

‘Hickory Dickory dock, the mouse ran up the clock!
The clock struck five, the mouse ran down to hide,
Hickory Dickory dock. TICK TOCK” (find a space to hide/hide the mouse as you say the word ‘hide’.)

Enjoy reciting this rhyme and actions together. Your child will start to imitate the actions as you sing and move.
