Mark-making with a twist!

Children markmaking
Children markmaking

What you need

Sticks found in the garden or objects of varying lengths found around the house.

Benefits

Mathematical language; concept of long/short and measurements; concept of comparisons and things that are the same/different.

The experience

Develop mathematical language and sort sticks in order from longest to shortest. This would be ideal if you have access to a garden, hunting for all different sized twigs and sticks. If you’re staying indoors, go on a hunt around the house for different objects of varying lengths.

Place them in a line from the shortest at one end to the longest. Develop mathematical vocabulary by talking about long/longer/short/shorter/shortest etc. You could use one of the sticks as a measuring tool and take it around the house or garden, hunting for things that are as long as the stick.
