Introducing a new song, vocabulary extension, listening to the change of voice as the song is sung, learning about the circle of life (caterpillar to butterfly).
This song is sung to the tune of ‘She’ll be coming around the mountain’. (You can check it out YouTube or other musical platforms if you do not know the tune of the song).
You can use a puppet or a sock to do this song, but you can also encourage the children to wiggle their finger for the caterpillar and flap their arms for the butterfly. (Model what you would like them to do).
Lyrics:
There’s a tiny caterpillar on a leaf (wiggle, wiggle)
There’s a tiny caterpillar on a leaf (wiggle, wiggle)
There’s a tiny caterpillar, tiny caterpillar,
There’s a tiny caterpillar on a leaf (wiggle, wiggle)
He will eat the leaves around him ‘til he’s full (munch, munch)
He will eat the leaves around him ‘til he’s full (munch, munch)
He will eat the leaves around, eat the leaves around
He will eat the leaves around him ‘til he’s full (munch, munch)
A cocoon is what he’s spinning for his home (spin, spin)
A cocoon is what he’s spinning for his home (spin, spin)
A cocoon is what he’s spinning, cocoon is what he’s spinning,
A cocoon is what he’s spinning for his home (spin, spin)
Then he’ll be a butterfly and fly away (flap, flap)
Then he’ll be a butterfly and fly away (flap, flap)
Then he’ll be a butterfly, be a butterfly,
Then he’ll be a butterfly and fly away (flap, flap)
You can also extend this experience by making your own caterpillar using either playdough, cardboard from toilet/kitchen roll, and getting your little one to paint it.
