What you need

  • Our ‘I can sing a rainbow’ video to listen to whilst carrying out this activity.
  • Scarves or pieces of material in different rainbow colours – yellow, pink, purple, orange, green, blue.
  • (If you don’t have scarves or fabric in these colours, you could create some streamers or flags with your child, using coloured pieces of paper and attaching to a stick for a flag or using a long, thin cut-out strips of paper for a streamer. Young babies can even have a streamer attached to a loop of paper that they can easily hold on to).

Benefits

  • Learning about language, communication and developing new words
  • Developing rhythm and rhyme awareness
  • A great way to play and bond for young babies
  • Developing listening and concentration skills
  • Family fun!

The experience

Put the scarves or other coloured resources in front of your child, in the same order as ‘I can sing a rainbow’. Play the song in the background and sing along. Move your body to the rhythm of the song; this will encourage your baby/toddler to do the same.

Start singing the song, touching the scarves as you sing, gently lifting some of them up in the air. For babies, try letting the scarves fall slowly on their head. For older children, encourage them to wave the scarf in the air and dance with it.

Let your child explore the scarves, feel their texture or even play a little peek-a-boo game whilst you say the name of the colours out loud. As you repeat singing the song, let your child touch each scarf and encourage them to sing or sound the names of the colours. Even young babies can enjoy babbling along!

Older children can also enjoy varying the tempo of the song – can they dance with the different colours if singing the song really fast?!

I can sing a rainbow lyrics:

Red and yellow and pink and green
Purple and orange and blue,
I can sing a rainbow,
Sing a rainbow,
Sing a rainbow too.

Listen with your ears,
Listen with your eyes,
And sing everything you see!
I can sing a rainbow,
Sing a rainbow,
Sing along with me…

Red and yellow and pink and green
Purple and orange and blue,
I can sing a rainbow,
Sing a rainbow,
Sing a rainbow too.

Listen with your ears,
Listen with your eyes,
And sing everything you see!
I can sing a rainbow,
Sing a rainbow,
Sing along with me.
